Home care questions families ask
Finding care, paying for it, and how our listings work.
How do I find home care near me?
Start with the help your loved one needs. For help with bathing, meals or companionship, read our in-home care guide, then browse the top-rated agencies in your city, check each one's license or registration number and call two or three. Your local Area Agency on Aging (1-800-677-1116) can tell you about programs that may help pay.
How do families pay for in-home care?
Most pay privately, out of savings or income. Long-term care insurance, VA benefits and some Medicaid waivers can help, and rates are usually quoted by the hour. See paying for care for the options.
How much does in-home care cost per hour?
The national median for in-home care is about $35 an hour (CareScout 2025), roughly $3,033 a month for 20 hours a week. Rates run from about $24 to $46 an hour depending on the state.
How do you choose which agencies to list?
We rank agencies by their public reviews, adjusted for how many reviews stand behind each rating. Where a state publishes a roster of licensed home care agencies we also check each license and show the license number and the date we checked it; where it does not, the page says the license is not verified. Any paid placement is labeled.
Can an agency pay to be listed higher?
No. Agencies can buy clearly labeled Partner or Sponsored spots, but rank is never for sale.
Is Care Close to Home free?
Yes. There's no sign-up and no call center. You contact agencies directly.
