In-home care means non-medical help that lets an older adult keep living at home: bathing and dressing, meals, housekeeping, errands, medication reminders and company. It is usually paid for privately, with long-term care insurance, a Medicaid program or VA benefits, not by Medicare. Compare at least three agencies, and ask each whether caregivers are employees, how they are screened, who supervises them, the minimum hours and the hourly rate.
In Texas, the median rate for in-home care is $30 an hour, about $2,600 a month for 20 hours a week (CareScout 2025).
The 748 agencies on this list are based in 79 ZIP codes; the busiest are 77036 (105 agencies), 77074 (43 agencies) and 77077 (37 agencies). If Houston has too few choices for your needs, the closest other cities we list are Bellaire (5 agencies, about 5 miles away), Stafford (48 agencies, about 7 miles away) and Sugar Land (87 agencies, about 12 miles away).

Houston is the largest city in Texas, with about 2.4 million residents, and around 12 percent are 65 or older. It has no formal zoning, and the result is a sprawling mix: the Houston Heights area, tower apartments near Uptown and the Texas Medical Center, and suburban subdivisions out toward the Beltway. Because the city is so big and so car-dependent, an older adult's world often shrinks to a few miles around home. Families usually look for caregivers who are already based in their part of the city.

In Houston, families ask about care in Houston Heights, Montrose, Midtown, Uptown, Third Ward, Museum District, Memorial City and Energy Corridor.
Agencies listed here also commonly serve nearby Galveston, Fort Bend County, Montgomery County and Brazoria County. Confirm each agency's service area before you sign.
Care that fits the routines of home often means getting to the places that matter: Texas Medical Center, Hermann Park, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Johnson Space Center, Allen's Landing and Houston Theater District.
Houston is humid subtropical: about 106 days a year reach 90 degrees, summer mornings are often above 90 percent humidity, and about 50 inches of rain falls annually. Flooding and hurricane season are part of planning, as Tropical Storm Allison and Hurricane Harvey showed, so families often arrange backup power and an evacuation plan. Roughly 77 percent of commuters drive alone, so traffic on the freeways and loops can affect caregiver arrival times, especially across the Inner Loop.

The state roster dated October 27, 2026 lists 748 agencies in Houston with an active Texas license. Agencies based in nearby towns may also serve Houston.
Call at least three. Ask whether caregivers are employees or independent contractors, how they are screened and supervised, the minimum hours and the hourly rate, and what happens when a caregiver is sick. Ask for a written care plan. Our guide to how to check an agency has the full list.
Each agency has an active state license and at least 10 public reviews. The Care Close to Home Score is out of 100: 60 points for the review rating, adjusted so a handful of reviews counts for less than a hundred; 20 for the number of reviews; 15 for the license check; and 5 for a verified phone and website. Agencies cannot pay to rank higher.
Most pay privately, by the hour. Long-term care insurance, Medicaid waivers and VA benefits can help with bathing help, meals, housekeeping or companionship.
The agency holds a license from the state health department. Licensing sets minimum standards and allows the state to inspect and act on complaints, but it does not rate how good the care is.
