In-home care means non-medical help that lets an older adult keep living at home: bathing and dressing, meals, housekeeping, errands, medication reminders and company. It is usually paid for privately, with long-term care insurance, a Medicaid program or VA benefits, not by Medicare. Compare at least three agencies, and ask each whether caregivers are employees, how they are screened, who supervises them, the minimum hours and the hourly rate.
In North Carolina, the median rate for in-home care is $30 an hour, about $2,600 a month for 20 hours a week (CareScout 2025).

Raleigh is North Carolina's capital and a fast-growing city of nearly 500,000, with about one in eight residents 65 or older. Older adults here may live in the historic homes of Oakwood and Hayes Barton, in mid-century neighborhoods inside the Beltline, or in newer subdivisions in North Raleigh. As part of the Research Triangle, the city draws families who relocate for work, so many families are newcomers, and dependable local support at home becomes a practical priority.

In Raleigh, families ask about care in Historic Oakwood, Hayes Barton, Five Points, Boylan Heights, Glenwood South, North Hills, Moore Square and North Ridge.
Agencies listed here also commonly serve nearby Cary, Garner, Wake Forest, Knightdale, Apex, Durham, Morrisville and Holly Springs. Confirm each agency's service area before you sign.
Care that fits the routines of home often means getting to the places that matter: North Carolina State Capitol, North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Pullen Park, William B. Umstead State Park and City Market.
Raleigh summers are hot and humid, with about 48 days a year at or above 90 degrees, and most winters bring some freezing rain or sleet. Past hurricanes such as Fran and Florence have brought downed trees and power outages, so families often plan ahead for storm season. GoRaleigh runs 33 bus routes and the city maintains 78 miles of greenway, but most households drive on I-40, I-440 and the toll road around the edges, so check how far a caregiver travels from your area.

Call at least three. Ask whether caregivers are employees or independent contractors, how they are screened and supervised, the minimum hours and the hourly rate, and what happens when a caregiver is sick. Ask for a written care plan. Our guide to how to check an agency has the full list.
Each agency has an active state license and at least 10 public reviews. The Care Close to Home Score is out of 100: 60 points for the review rating, adjusted so a handful of reviews counts for less than a hundred; 20 for the number of reviews; 15 for the license check; and 5 for a verified phone and website. Agencies cannot pay to rank higher.
Most pay privately, by the hour. Long-term care insurance, Medicaid waivers and VA benefits can help with bathing help, meals, housekeeping or companionship.
The agency holds a license from the state health department. Licensing sets minimum standards and allows the state to inspect and act on complaints, but it does not rate how good the care is.
