We ranked the top five in-home care agencies serving Dothan, AL by their public reviews. They are ordered by the Care Close to Home Score, which combines the review rating (adjusted for how many reviews stand behind it), the number of reviews and whether a phone number is listed. Each has at least 5 public reviews, which is fewer than we like to see, so treat the order as a guide.
We have not verified state licenses for these agencies: Alabama does not publish a usable roster of non-medical home care agencies, so this list is based on reviews, not on a license check. Ask each agency for its license or registration number if the state requires one.
In-home care means non-medical help that lets an older adult keep living at home: bathing and dressing, meals, housekeeping, errands, medication reminders and company. It is usually paid for privately, with long-term care insurance, a Medicaid program or VA benefits, not by Medicare. Compare at least three agencies, and ask each whether caregivers are employees, how they are screened, who supervises them, the minimum hours and the hourly rate.
In Alabama, the median rate for in-home care is $27 an hour, about $2,340 a month for 20 hours a week (CareScout 2025).

Call at least three. Ask whether caregivers are employees or independent contractors, how they are screened and supervised, the minimum hours and the hourly rate, and what happens when a caregiver is sick. Ask for a written care plan. Our guide to how to check an agency has the full list.
The Care Close to Home Score is out of 100. About 70 points come from the review rating, adjusted so a handful of reviews counts for less than a hundred, about 24 from the number of reviews, and about 6 from having a phone number listed. Agencies cannot pay to rank higher, and the score does not include a state license check.
We have not verified licenses for these agencies, because Alabama does not publish a usable roster of non-medical home care agencies. Ask each agency for its license or registration number if the state requires one, and confirm it with the state.
Most pay privately, by the hour. Long-term care insurance, Medicaid waivers and VA benefits can help with bathing help, meals, housekeeping or companionship.
